🥋 What Do I Need to Earn Rank?
To begin earning rank in the Bujinkan system through Ninja Training TV, here’s what you’ll need:
- Join the Bujinkan Organization – Yearly Renewal is required every January
Grandmaster Hatsumi has set this requirement. Membership costs $40 plus a $15 processing fee. Click here to learn more or purchase a membership.

Shortly after you purchase your membership, our team will provide you with a Google Drive folder where test submissions will be added. We will also mail you your Bujinkan Membership card. - Purchase the Black Belt Curriculum (Full Set or Individual Videos)
This set includes all you need to study from 9th Kyu through to 1st Kyu and includes a PDF of the curriculum. - Train Consistently
Focus on the level you’re currently working on. We recommend training 2- 3 times a week to build solid fundamentals. - Purchase an Earn Rank Testing Package
Each Kyu has its testing fee package, which you can find here. - Upload Your Test Video
When you’re ready to demonstrate your skills, simply upload your test video to the private Google Drive folder provided after purchasing your test package. Once your video is uploaded, email us at [email protected] to let the team know you’re ready for review. - Sensei Roemke will Review Your Submission
Quickly receive feedback on your test submission directly from Sensei Roemke. If, for any reason, you do not pass the first time, resubmissions are free of charge, and Sensei Roemke will walk you through what needs to be done.
What Do I Include in My Test Video?
Once you’re confident in your current rank’s material, it’s time to record your test video. Here’s what to include:
- Demonstrate each movement from your current Kyu level. You’ll follow the curriculum and use the PDF for techniques and skills to be performed for each kyu. Some people have someone read through the curriculum while they demonstrate.
- All techniques from 9th Kyu through Shodan can be demonstrated solo, so you can progress entirely on your own if needed. However, having a training partner can be helpful for certain movements, especially those involving throws, joint locks, or takedowns. Many students get creative by using a throwing dummy, practicing with a spouse, child, or friend, or even walking through the techniques verbally and physically to show their understanding. The most important thing is clearly demonstrating that you know the movement, strategy, and intention behind each technique.
- Keep the video simple and focused — no fancy editing required. We just want to see your movement, timing, and effort.
Which Testing Package Should I Choose?
We offer two Kyu-level testing options:
Basic Package – $50 (Most Popular)
- Email Response: You’ll get a pass/fail notification via email, along with written feedback and training tips. (Most popular choice)
- If you pass, you’ll receive a printable Ninja Training TV Rank Certificate.
- No charge for re-tests if you need more time to improve!
Video Response Package – $100
- Video Feedback: You’ll receive a custom video response from Sensei Roemke himself with personalized guidance.
- Option to purchase an official Japanese Rank Certificate from the Honbu Dojo once you pass.
- Unlimited re-tests until you succeed.
🥷 How Do I Earn Black Belt (Shodan) Rank?
Testing for 1st Degree Black Belt (Shodan) is a significant milestone and must be done live—either in person, via Zoom, or through video submission if pre-approved by Sensei Roemke.
Once you’ve passed 1st Kyu, you can contact Ninja Training TV to arrange your Shodan test and discuss the best option based on your location and availability.

Q: Do I have to start at 9th Kyu even if I’ve trained elsewhere?
Yes—unless you provide proof of your current rank from the Honbu Dojo in Japan, you’ll start at 9th Kyu. Many high-ranking students prefer to start from the beginning with NTTV and have reported being glad they did and have learned new valuable techniques..
Q: What if I don’t pass the first time?
No worries. You can retest as many times as needed, at no extra cost, until you pass.
Q: Can I receive an official Bujinkan certificate from Japan?
Yes, once you pass using the Video Response Package, you’ll have the option to order an official Japanese certificate. Pricing depends upon delivery location.
